How Does Reiki Energy Healing Work?

If you are curious about Reiki but not entirely sure how Reiki healing works, you are definitely not alone.
One of the most common things my clients say before their first session is, “I'm not really sure how it works, I just know I feel drawn to try it.” And honestly, that is often the best place to begin.
Reiki is a gentle form of energy healing that is designed to support relaxation, emotional balance, and overall wellbeing. It is not about fixing you or making dramatic promises. It is about creating space for the body and mind to settle enough that healing, rest, and release can begin to happen naturally.
Over the years, I have worked with people from all walks of life, including many who would never describe themselves as “spiritual”. You may come because you are overwhelmed. You are grieving. You are exhausted from caring for everyone else. Or you simply know that something feels out of balance and you need a moment to reconnect with yourself again.
So what actually happens during Reiki, and why do so many people find it helpful?
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice that works with the body’s natural energy systems. The word itself roughly translates to “universal life energy”.
During a Reiki session, I place my hands either lightly on or just above my client's body to support the flow of energy and help the nervous system move into a calmer, more balanced state.
My clients often describe feeling deeply relaxed during a session. Some notice warmth or tingling sensations. Others feel emotional release, clarity, or simply a sense of peace that they have not felt in a long time.
It is also possible you may feel very little during the session itself but notice afterwards that you are sleeping better, reacting differently to stress, or feeling emotionally lighter.
There is no one “correct” way to experience Reiki.
Why people are drawn to Reiki
Modern life asks a lot of us.
We are carrying stress levels that our nervous systems were never designed to hold long term. Constant stimulation, worry, pressure, overthinking, emotional exhaustion. Eventually the body starts asking for rest in one way or another.
This is often where Reiki comes in.
Reiki can provide excellent supportive during periods of:
- stress or overwhelm
- emotional exhaustion
- burnout
- grief
- anxiety
- life transitions
- difficulty sleeping
- feeling emotionally “stuck”
It is not about bypassing real life or pretending difficult things do not exist. It is about creating a calmer internal environment so you can meet life from a steadier place.
From my own experience, both personally and through working with clients, that gentle shift can make a very real difference.
What happens during a Reiki session?
If you have never had Reiki before, the unknown can feel intimidating. But sessions are actually very simple and gentle.
There’s no pressure to know what you need before you arrive. We work intuitively, and each session is different, depending on what’s present for you.
I energetically clear the space before you arrive and tune in to what you may need. I then pick crystals and cards that intuitively I feel will support you doing your session. I use Reiki, Angelic Reiki, crystals and sound healing intuitively, based on what’s present for you on the day. There’s no formula. No rushing. Just space for your body and energy to settle.
You remain fully clothed and lie comfortably on my treatment couch and we work through the session together.
There is nothing you need to “do”. You do not need to meditate properly or clear your mind. In fact, many of my clients fall asleep during sessions because it is one of the few times they allow themselves to properly stop.
Sometimes emotions surface. Sometimes people feel unexpectedly emotional afterwards. This is completely normal. When the body finally feels safe enough to soften, things we have been holding onto can begin to move.
This is one reason I always approach healing work gently and with care.
My background and approach
Before working fully in energy healing, I worked within the NHS for many years. That experience shaped how I approach healing work now.
I understand the importance of grounded, compassionate support. I also understand that many people want to explore complementary therapies without feeling judged or pressured into beliefs that do not resonate with them.
My approach has always been simple. Meet people where they are.
You do not need to understand everything about energy to benefit from slowing down, resting deeply, and allowing yourself to be supported for an hour.
Sometimes that alone is incredibly healing.

Ways to support yourself between sessions
Even small rituals can help you stay connected to yourself between healing sessions.
My clients find comfort in working with calming crystals alongside Reiki, particularly:
- amethyst for rest and emotional calm
- rose quartz for self-compassion
- black tourmaline for grounding
- lepidolite during periods of stress or emotional overwhelm
You might place a crystal under your pillow, carry one in your pocket throughout the day, or simply hold it quietly for a few minutes before bed.
Simple practices are often the most powerful because they are the easiest to return to consistently.
Sound healing can also work beautifully alongside Reiki. I often use sound within healing sessions because gentle vibration can help people relax very deeply and settle the nervous system more fully.
In many ways, Reiki is less about “figuring it out” and more about giving yourself permission to pause. Permission to soften. Permission to receive support instead of always being the one holding everything together.
And for my clients, that alone becomes the beginning of something important.
