Crystals for the Autumn Equinox

Crystals for the Autumn Equinox

There is a week every September where the light goes and nobody announces it. You come home at the usual time and the kitchen needs a lamp on. The garden furniture starts to look like it is waiting for something. Most of us respond by carrying on exactly as we were, then wonder why we feel more tired than we did a fortnight ago.

The autumn equinox falls on Wednesday 23 September this year, just after one in the morning. Day and night sit at almost equal length, and from that point the balance tips towards darkness for the next six months.

I am not going to tell you that is a bad thing.

The spring equinox asks what you want to begin. This one asks something harder. What are you still carrying that belongs to a season which has already ended?

What the equinox is actually for

Traditionally this was the second harvest. The point in the year where you counted what you had, decided what was worth storing, and accepted that the rest was not coming with you into winter. I find that translates surprisingly well to modern life.

September is when people come to me saying they feel behind. They set intentions in January, made plans in spring, and now the year is three quarters gone and the list has not moved. There is a particular kind of low-level guilt that arrives with the darker evenings.

The equinox is a good moment to put that down. Not to try harder. To take an honest look at what you have actually built this year, which is usually more than you think, and to be clear about what you are choosing not to take forward.

That is the work. The crystals support it rather than doing it for you.

The crystals I reach for at this time of year

Ametrine

Amethyst and citrine grown together in one crystal.

I cannot think of a better stone for this particular moment. Ametrine holds two energies in the same piece, the calm of amethyst and the warmth and drive of citrine, and it does not ask you to choose between them.

When you are trying to slow down and stay motivated at the same time, which is precisely the tension of autumn, this is where I start. It is also the stone I suggest to people who find decisions difficult, because it supports thinking clearly without getting cold about it.

Labradorite

Grey and unremarkable until you turn it into the light.

Labradorite earns its place in autumn because of what it does rather than what it looks like. It is a stone for going into change without bracing against it, and it protects your energy while you do.

If you are heading into a season of shorter days, or a period of your life where you cannot yet see the shape of what is coming, keep this one close. There is something in the fact that its colour only shows at certain angles. You have to move to find it.

Moss Agate

Green threaded through clear stone like something growing.

Moss Agate - Penny King Crystals
Moss Agate

This is my harvest stone. Moss agate is about steady growth rather than sudden results, which makes it the right companion for taking stock. It has long been called the gardener's stone, and I recommend it to anyone who needs reminding that things have been developing even when nothing visible seemed to be happening. Good for gratitude, if that word has ever felt too soft to be useful to you.

The moss agate I have at the moment is carved into a dragon, which suits it. Dragons across most traditions are guardians of what has already been gathered rather than hunters of anything new, and that is more or less the job description for this point in the year.

Honey calcite

Warm gold, the colour of late afternoon light.

Autumn takes something out of people, and honey calcite is what I reach for when someone tells me their motivation has gone with the sunshine. It supports confidence and the will to keep going, without the buzz that some of the more energising stones bring. Useful on a desk, or anywhere you sit down to do the thing you have been avoiding.

Mookaite

Deep reds, mustards and creams. Autumn in a stone.

Mookaite is a jasper from Western Australia and it is the one I suggest when someone is standing at a fork in the road. It supports decision making and helps you commit to a choice rather than keeping every option open indefinitely. Grounding, physically steadying, and useful if the change of season tends to leave you feeling scattered.

I have a dragon carved from this one as well, and the colours do something particular in that shape. Autumn reds and mustards in a form built to hold its ground.

How to work with them

You do not need all five, and you do not need a ritual.

Choose one. Sit with it for ten minutes on the evening of the equinox, or the evening closest to it that you can actually manage, and use that time to be honest about the year so far. What has gone well. What you are tired of carrying. What you are prepared to leave behind.

After that, keep the stone somewhere you will encounter it. In a pocket, on a desk, by the kettle. The value is in the reminder more than the ceremony.

If you like something more structured, write down two lists on the night. What you are harvesting and what you are composting. Put the stone on top of them and leave it there until the end of the month.

If you would like some help with it & choosing crystals for the autumn equinox...

Autumn is when my diary fills up, and I think that is because this is the point in the year where people stop pushing through and start asking for support.

If you are not sure which stone would suit you, or you would like a combination put together for what you are actually dealing with rather than what the internet suggests, send me a message and tell me what is going on. I offer personal shopping in person or over Zoom, and healing sessions by appointment from my healing room in Watford.

The days are getting shorter either way. You may as well go into them with something steady in your pocket.
